How to Play the 50 States Challenge

Playing the game is simple, frictionless, and requires no setup. Here is how to jump right in:

  1. Select Your Difficulty: On the start screen, choose between Level 1 (Multiple Choice), Level 2 (The Map Click), or Level 3 (The Typist).

  2. Click Start Game: Once you select your level, click the blue "Start Game" button. The timer will immediately begin!

  3. Follow the Prompts: Look at the top center of the game board.

    • In Level 1 & 3: A specific state will highlight in blue on the map. You must either click the correct multiple-choice button or type the correct name and hit submit.

    • In Level 2: The game will display (and speak aloud!) the name of a state. You must find and click that specific state on the blank map.

  4. Watch Your Accuracy: Correct answers turn green, while incorrect guesses will flash red and deduct from your overall accuracy score. If you miss a state twice, the game will give you a flashing red hint!

  5. Beat Your Personal Best: Once you successfully identify all 50 states, your final time and accuracy will be displayed. The game automatically saves your top score for each level, so click "Play Again" or use the gray reset arrow (⟳) on the map to try and beat your own record!

  6. Share Your Score: Proud of your time? Click the green "Share Score" button at the end to instantly copy your results and challenge your friends or classmates.

3 Progressive Levels to Master the Map

Unlike standard map quizzes, this game grows with your students. Whether you are introducing the map to fourth graders or testing high schoolers on spelling, there is a perfect level for your classroom:

  • Level 1: Multiple Choice (The Warm-Up). The game highlights a state on the map, and students choose the correct name from four options. Perfect for beginners and visual learners!

  • Level 2: The Map Click (The Classic Challenge). The game prompts the student with a state name, and they must locate and click the correct shape on the map.

  • Level 3: The Typist (High School/Mastery). The ultimate test. A state is highlighted, and students must type the name entirely from memoryβ€”spelling counts!

Built-In Accessibility for Every Learner

Every classroom is diverse. To ensure early readers, ESL students, and those with learning accommodations can play seamlessly, the game features a built-in text-to-speech audio engine. In Level 2, the game will automatically read the state name aloud, ensuring reading comprehension never gets in the way of mastering geography.

A Distraction-Free Geography Game for the Classroom

After spending over 25 years in the classroom, I know exactly how frustrating it is when digital learning tools are cluttered with flashing banner ads and confusing layouts. When a student is trying to learn, focus is everything.

That is exactly why I built this interactive map challenge. It is a completely frictionless, "clean" experience, meaning your students can focus entirely on mastering U.S. geography without the noise. It is this exact standard of classroom-ready quality that has led over 100,000+ educators to trust Mister Harms for their history and social studies resources.

Born from a Real 50-State Road Trip

Geography is more than just memorizing shapes on a screen; it is about real places, diverse cultures, and great adventures. I wanted to bring an authentic passion for travel to this game, especially after my family and I finally achieved our lifelong goal of visiting all 50 states and exploring many of the U.S. National Parks!

As a fourth-generation teacher, passing down a tangible appreciation for our country's landscape is exactly what makes social studies so rewarding. Whether you are projecting this on a Smartboard for a whole-class competition or assigning it to 1:1 Chromebooks, this game brings the map to life.
