Quick Summary: Master the 50 states and capitals with classroom-proven resources developed by veteran educator Mister Harms. This guide features the Interactive States Game, a comprehensive 50 States & Capitals Mega-Pack for middle and high school, and self-grading Google Forms assessments. Trusted by over 100,000 educators, these activities—ranging from the kinesthetic "Capitals Toss" game to digital emoji puzzles—are designed to improve geographic literacy and make social studies engaging for every learning style.
Ever since my first year of teaching, I have always assessed my students on the 50 United States and their capitals. Because of the value I've seen for my students, I plan to continue this best practice for years to come. Being able to identify these major geographic boundaries and cities is something that will never be a waste of time.
Whether it's taking a road trip, watching a weather map, following professional sports, or learning about American history, knowing the locations of the United States and their capitals is essential for a full understanding of "all things USA!"
Over the past 25 years, I have created and accumulated many resources to help my students study for the ever-anticipated states and capitals tests. Today, these same resources are trusted by over 100,000 educators. In this post, you'll find the exact tools I use in my classroom, and hopefully, you can find something to use in yours as well.
NEW: Interactive States & Capitals Game

Homework: A fun alternative to traditional worksheets that students actually want to complete.
The 50 States & Capitals Mega-Pack

“Thank you so much much for this resource! I was so happy when I found it, saved me from having to reinvent the wheel on how I normally test my students on states and capitals. It is a great resource and very easy to use.”
Classroom Favorite: The "Capitals Toss" Game
One fun classroom game that my students love is the "Capitals Toss!" It requires zero prep and gets everyone moving:
The Setup: Ask students to stand up in a circle.
The Toss: Toss a ball to one student and say a state (e.g., "South Dakota!").
The Goal: The student who catches the ball must say the correct corresponding capital ("Pierre!").
The Challenge: If they get it right, they toss it to someone else. If they don't, they sit down.
As students get better, I keep track of the time so they can try and beat their own score or the score of my other classes. Students love the competition of trying to win and improve!
Multi-Sensory Fun for Every Learning Style
Beyond worksheets, I love using diverse media to keep students engaged. Over all my years in the classroom, I've found that these specific tools are the "secret sauce" for reaching every student in the room.
50 States Emoji Guessing Game: Perfect for a "Friday Finisher" or a reliable sub plan. Whether you set it up as a high-energy race or a quiet brain-teaser, students love the challenge of decoding these emoji puzzles.
Online Study Games: These are a hit whether played together on the SMARTBoard or assigned for independent study at home. Check out the 50 States and Capitals Game to see why my students love it.
Tour The States YouTube Video: When you have four minutes to fill, this catchy video is the ultimate review tool. It’s the perfect way to keep your students learning right up until the bell rings.
Assessment Made Easy with Google Forms
Having a final goal, such as a states and/or capitals test, is a helpful assessment tool in gauging student comprehension. However, grading 50-question tests can be a hurdle. That’s why I’ve converted my assessments into Google Forms.
Self-Grading: It's automatically graded for you!
Paperless: Extremely easy to assign through Google Classroom.
Modified Versions: Includes tests with modified word banks for differentiated learning.
Free Resource: I want to offer you my Google Forms 50 States Map Test for FREE! Download the FREE Google Forms States test here.
