Master the 50 States and Capitals: Engaging Activities & Resources for Your Classroom
Quick Summary: Master the 50 states and capitals with classroom-proven resources developed by veteran educator Mister Harms. This guide features the Interactive States Game, a comprehensive 50 States & Capitals Mega-Pack for middle and high school, and self-grading Google Forms assessments. Trusted by over 100,000 educators, these activities—ranging from the kinesthetic "Capitals Toss" game to digital emoji puzzles—are designed to improve geographic literacy and make social studies engaging for every learning style.
Ever since my first year of teaching, I have always assessed my students on the 50 United States and their capitals. Because of the value I've seen for my students, I plan to continue this best practice for years to come. Being able to identify these major geographic boundaries and cities is something that will never be a waste of time.
Whether it's taking a road trip, watching a weather map, following professional sports, or learning about American history, knowing the locations of the United States and their capitals is essential for a full understanding of "all things USA!"
Over the past 25 years, I have created and accumulated many resources to help my students study for the ever-anticipated states and capitals tests. Today, these same resources are trusted by over 100,000 educators. In this post, you'll find the exact tools I use in my classroom, and hopefully, you can find something to use in yours as well.
NEW: Interactive States & Capitals Game
I am thrilled to introduce the Interactive States & Capitals Game. This digital experience is designed to get students excited about geography through gamified learning. It’s perfect for:
Bell Ringers: Start class with a quick 5-minute challenge.
Station Rotations: A dedicated digital station for independent practice.
Homework: A fun alternative to traditional worksheets that students actually want to complete.
The 50 States & Capitals Mega-Pack
Like anything that must be remembered in life, it takes time and repetition to successfully memorize the states and capitals. With a wide variety of study materials, the 50 States & Capitals Mega-Pack is my favorite bundle because it includes resources that fit all the various learning styles.
What’s Included:
United States Capitals Crossword: A brain-teasing way to reinforce names.
Blank Study Maps of the United States: Perfect for practice or final assessments.
State Research Templates: Go beyond the map and dive into state history.
Digital Integration: Many of these are available as Google Drive documents to assign directly in Google Classroom!
States & Capitals Practice Worksheets: Perfect for practice or homework assignments.
Study Tools: A study list of the 50 U.S. States and Capitals for students.
Test Forms: Multiple formats to assess students and test their knowledge.
Self-Grading Google Forms: Also available in Google Drive format to assign through Google Classroom.
Download: the 50 States & Capitals Mega-Pack for your classroom.
“Thank you so much much for this resource! I was so happy when I found it, saved me from having to reinvent the wheel on how I normally test my students on states and capitals. It is a great resource and very easy to use.”
Classroom Favorite: The "Capitals Toss" Game
One fun classroom game that my students love is the "Capitals Toss!" It requires zero prep and gets everyone moving:
The Setup: Ask students to stand up in a circle.
The Toss: Toss a ball to one student and say a state (e.g., "South Dakota!").
The Goal: The student who catches the ball must say the correct corresponding capital ("Pierre!").
The Challenge: If they get it right, they toss it to someone else. If they don't, they sit down.
As students get better, I keep track of the time so they can try and beat their own score or the score of my other classes. Students love the competition of trying to win and improve!

This primary source lesson will help students better understand one of the most important documents of all time - The Declaration of Independence. Though Thomas Jefferson's Declaration can be difficult to understand for some, this worksheet is a great overall, big-picture way to study such an important document without becoming overwhelmed.
The Declaration is really just a big "break-up letter" from the colonists to the King. While referring to the included primary source text of the Declaration, students will answer given questions and find a variety of excerpts to help them understand this important document. This has been a fabulous, concise way for my students to best understand the Declaration of Independence. I love using this for my 7th & 8th grade classes, but I would highly recommend this being appropriate through grade 12.

What's Included In This Declaration Of Independence Worksheet & Lesson Plan:
Complete set of teacher directions to help guide the lesson that includes a few suggestions and ideas for introducing the lesson.
A copy of the Declaration of Independence text broken down into 11 sections.
Two page primary-source analysis worksheet with questions to answer, excerpts to find, and sections to summarize.
A one page list of extension activities for further reinforcement and understanding.
All documents are in PDF and GOOGLE DRIVE format!
“Great resource. I'm always trying to find ways to make primary sources more fun and this definitely delivered. My students still bring this up months after we did the activity! Thank you!" - Jessica ★★★★★

Additional Reinforcement:
If you'd like an additional idea for studying the Declaration, I highly recommend supplementing this lesson with my Declaration of Independence: Break-Up Letter and Texting Activity! This "break-up" activity begins with the teacher finding a break-up letter in the classroom and then reads it to the students as a fabulous hook and introduction to the Declaration!
I like to use both of these resources with my students as each resource helps various learners! I also love setting up the Declaration of Independence unit with my lesson on Thomas Paine's Common Sense!
⭐️ All of this is included in my American Revolution Bundle!

How It Works:
The script follows a fictional emigrant family, the Millers, from their "jumping off town" in Independence, Missouri, toward their new home in Oregon City. Along the way, the class must debate and vote on critical decisions:
Geography: Purchase supplies in Independence, cross the dangerous Platte River, and pass landmarks like Chimney Rock and South Pass.
Survival: Encounter Native American traders, face typical trials like cholera, and make the ultimate choice at The Dalles, Oregon.
The Climax: Your Students Decide their Fate!
At the end of the main script, your class must vote:
Choice A: The Columbia River. Risk the massive whirlpools on a pine log raft?
Choice B: The Barlow Pass. Spend your last $5 on a toll road to risk starvation in the dense Mt. Hood forests?
Based on the vote, you flip to the corresponding Alternate Ending (included!) to discover if your wagon train successfully navigated their path... or paid the final price of the trail.
Perfect for Distance Learning & Classroom Differentiation:
This product is a flexible educational tool designed to fit any classroom:
Role Play: Features a cast of 15–20 people, perfect for whole-class engagement.
Informational Text: Strengthens reading comprehension, analysis of primary sources, and understanding of context.
Cross-Curricular: Covers Social Studies standard (Manifest Destiny, Manifest Destiny, Movement West) and ELA standards (reading fluency, perspective, and debate).
What’s Included in Your Download:
Full Readers Theater Script (Acts 1-5).
Class Voting Guide & Debate Prompt.
Alternate Ending A: The Columbia River (Risky and white-water based!).
Alternate Ending B: The Barlow Pass (Exhausting and land-based!).
A Student Diary Reflection Activity based on the characters' point of view.

One of the absolute best videos I have ever used in my own American History classes is National Geographic’s “Lewis and Clark: Great Journey West” (narrated by Jeff Bridges). The Declaration of Independence was really just a big "break-up" letter written by the colonists to the King of Great Britain. This historical document was written to convince the world of the King's abuses and to let everyone know that the colonies no longer wanted to be in a relationship with Great Britain.
While studying the Declaration of Independence, students will use this assignment as a reinforcement to understand just what Jefferson wrote in this historical document. The lesson starts with the teacher reading a juicy "break-up" letter that was found in the classroom.
After all the suspense and drama of the reading, students will be directed to the texting assignment. By texting back and forth, this lesson is a fun way to understand the "big idea" behind the Declaration of Independence. Students will also be able to include their creativity using hashtags and emojis! This activity is definitely #OneOfMyFavorites!
